Kalaheo girls basketball coach Chico Furtado was upset earlier this week when his team had to forfeit its home-court advantage in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division I Tournament.

Things got even worse when his Mustangs were upset by Roosevelt, 52-51, on a "delayed" 3-pointer by Chelsie Kadota with 20 seconds remaining at Radford.

The shot was originally scored a two-point field goal and the scoreboard read 51-51.

On Kalaheo's final possession, the Mustangs' Shanadee Canon was fouled on the inbounds pass.

As Kalaheo (East No. 1) was bringing the ball up the floor, the scoreboard changed to 52-51, but the officials didn't stop the clock to inform the coaches.

The Mustangs' Shaina Siliga missed a 3-pointer from the left wing and the ball went out of bounds with 1.6 seconds remaining. Roosevelt inbounded the ball and time expired.

"I don't know what they called, but there was a whole possession where they didn't change the (scoreboard)," Furtado said. "Shanandee took an inbounds pass, was fouled and it was still 51-51. So I'm sitting, going, 'OK we're tied, we don't need a timeout, we'll bring it up.'

"And then after (Siliga) shoots the shot, it misses and it goes out of bounds. I'm thinking, 'OK, overtime.' I turn around and look and it's 52-51. I don't know what's going on here."

Kadota's game-winner was set up when teammate Tati Beasley stepped to the free-throw line with a chance to tie the game with 29 seconds remaining, but missed both shots. Roosevelt's Dasha Kawakami rebounded the miss and the ball was passed to Kadota, who was standing wide open on the left baseline.

When asked if the shot was a 3-pointer, Kadota said: "Oh yeah. I was definitely behind the line."

Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said: "They gave us the 3. I'm not sure what it was. I'm just thankful, that's all I can say."

Kalaheo's largest lead was 43-33 on a basket by Taylor Smith with 6:33 remaining in the game, but Roosevelt wouldn't go away.

Roosevelt (East No. 5) will play Kaiser in the semifinals Tuesday. Kahuku and Farrington will meet in the other semifinal.

Kalaheo won the teams' previous two meetings by 28 points each time.

Beasley scored 14 points, Nicole Yoshimoto added 10 and Kadota nine for Roosevelt (6-8).

Taylor Smith scored 17 of her 24 points in the second half for Kalaheo.

Kalaheo (11-2) should have hosted last night, but the OIA awarded two quarterfinal games to Radford after a fan shoved an official during a game at Kalaheo the previous week, and the league did not approve of the school's security plan for last night's games.

"This whole week was a downer for us," Furtado said. "It's just been a stressful week."
