Monroe leads way for UH track team

Senior Tasha Monroe won two events yesterday as the University of Hawai'i women's track and field team put on a strong showing at the Occidental College Invitational in Eagle Rock, Calif.

Monroe set a school record and personal best, and also achieved an NCAA Regional qualifying time in winning the 400-meter dash in 53.81 seconds. She also won the 200 in 24.06 seconds.

Junior Novelle Murray won the hammer throw with 166 feet, 8 inches, and freshman Meghan Weaver won the shot put with 46 feet, 10 inches.

Sophomores Kelly Young and Dana Buchanan achieved NCAA Regional qualifying times and broke the school record in the 1500. Young placed fourth in 4 minutes, 26.18 seconds and Buchanan, who held the previous UH record of 4:28.40, finished fifth in 4:27.64.

The Rainbow Wahine now turn their attention to the Western Athletic Conference Championships, May 11 to 14, at Tulsa.



TENNIS

UH-Hilo eliminated

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's and women's teams lost to host UC San Diego in an NCAA Division II West Regional yesterday at La Jolla, Calif.

The Tritons beat the Vulcans, 5-1, in the men's competition and 5-0 in women's play.

Jeremy Moitry, ranked 49th in Division II singles, won Hilo's only match of the day when he beat 25th-ranked Bryan Swatt, 6-4, 6-3, in first singles.



ACADEMICS

PacWest honors for 16

Sixteen players from Hawai'i schools were among 38 student-athletes named to the 2005 Spring All-Academic Pacific West Conference teams yesterday.

Leading the way were Hawai'i Pacific softball player Clerisse Lemke, a sophomore biology major with a 3.96 GPA, HPU men's tennis player Matey Pampulov, a senior computer science major with a 3.92 GPA, and Hawai'i-Hilo women's tennis player Jennifer Earle, a sophomore business administration major with a 3.80 GPA.

To qualify for the teams, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be in at least their second year of competition at their current schools.

Here is a list of the players from Hawai'i schools with their GPAs:

Softball — Clerisse Lemke (HPU) 3.96, Heather Murray (BYUH) 3.89, Sarah Steele (UHH) 3.89, Chynna Wilcox (BYUH) 3.76, Mandy Kirkham (BYUH) 3.62, Mallory Anderson (HPU) 3.59, Echo Hatch Allred (BYUH) 3.53, Zoie Sevilla (UHH) 3.36, Anuhea Diamond (HPU) 3.35. Men's tennis — Matey Pampulov (HPU) 3.92, Jeff Rice (BYUH) 3.69. Women's tennis — Jennifer Earle (UHH) 3.80, Trisha Piercy (BYUH) 3.77, Tiana Lum-Tucker (UHH) 3.76, Adrienn Hegedus (BYUH) 3.35, Jing Jing Liu (BYUH) 3.30.



WATER POLO

Kahuku captures OIA

Kahuku defeated Roosevelt, 5-2, yesterday to capture the O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls championship at the Kaimuki High pool.

Scoring details were not available.

Earlier, Ivy Yi scored five goals as Kalani topped Kapolei, 9-6, for third place. Jill Rickard led Kapolei with four goals.

Meanwhile, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls championship match between Punahou and Kamehameha will be held tomorrow at Iolani at 6:15 p.m. It was originally scheduled for 5 p.m.



FOOTBALL

Calgary signs Gesser

The Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League have signed quarterback Jason Gesser.

Gesser, 24, is a Saint Louis School alum who signed a free agent contract with the NFL's Tennessee Titans during the 2003 season.
