California defeats Hawai'i school in national mock trial

Associated Press

MILL VALLEY, Calif. — A group of Marin County high school students made all the right motions against a Hawai'i school to become the first northern California team to win the national mock trial competition.

Students from Mill Valley's Tamalpais High School brought home the gold Sunday after a grueling three days of arguing in Charlotte, N.C.

"It feels amazing," said an elated Natalie Robinson, a 16-year-old junior who played the role of an attorney. "We worked so hard for so long."

Tam High was only the second California team to win the 21-year-old competition. Arlington High School of Riverside won in 1994.

The Tamalpais team won four rounds of mock trials before facing off against a team from Kaua'i.

The Marin team took on both defendant and plaintiff roles in arguing a case about a defective bolt that killed a race car driver. The students had a month to prepare their case.

The competition, sponsored by the National Academy of Trial Lawyers, included 45 teams from across the nation. The contest was judged by a panel of trial lawyers and judges.
