Advertiser Staff

The Navy and National Park Service were investigating an incident yesterday at the USS Arizona Memorial Visitors Center in which two adults were injured when they were struck by a cleat and/or line used to secure the Navy's Arizona tour boats to the pier.

Passengers yesterday continued to travel via the Navy's tour boats to the USS Arizona Memorial, even after two people were injured when they were struck by a cleat and/or line used to secure the boats.

Two sailors assigned to the boat involved in the incident have been removed from duty while the incident is being investigated, said Navy Region Hawai'i public affairs officer Lt. Barbara Mertz. The injured people were taken to Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. Their injuries were not believed to critical, officials said.

Details on the incident were not released.

"It's very unfortunate," Mertz said of the incident. She said the USS Arizona Memorial attracts 1.5 million visitors a year and that yesterday's incident was a rare occurrence.

Federal firefighters assisted the injured people. Tours to the USS Arizona Memorial continued through the day.
