Salvation Army lauded by state

The Salvation Army celebrates its 111th anniversary in Hawai'i this week in conjunction with the national observance of Salvation Army Week. To commemorate the event, Gov. Linda Lingle and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann have declared Salvation Army Week in Hawai'i by signing separate proclamations.

Each year, the Salvation Army provides a variety of social services to thousands of families in Hawai'i. Last year, it touched the lives of one in every 13 people in Hawai'i by assisting them with services ranging from the provision of material needs to rehabilitation and drug treatment services.

Overall, there were an estimated 440,000 instances of material assistance, including lodging, meals, clothing and other basic needs provided to many of Hawai'i's disadvantaged families.
