Austin, Tresnak Jr. win Kaua'i paddling event

O'ahu paddlers Jimmy Austin and Karel Tresnak Jr. won the Kaua'i World Challenge relay canoe race Saturday.

Austin and Tresnak completed the 34-mile course from Wailua Beach to Salt Pond in 3 hours, 43 minutes, 33 seconds. The course was divided into four legs, with each paddler having to complete two legs.

Kai Bartlett and Pat Dolan placed second in the men's canoe division in 3:45:18.

Australians Lisa Curry-Kenny and Robyn Saultry won the women's canoe division in 4:23:40. Hawai'i paddlers Noe Auger and Cherisse Keli'i were second at 4:27:19.

Australians Dean Gardiner and Nathan Baggaley won the surf-ski division, and had the fastest overall time at 3:17:29.

The event featured a $20,000 prize purse — the largest for a paddling race in Hawai'i.



GOLF

Hamamoto honored

The University of Hawai'i's Jarett Hamamoto was named to the men's all-Western Athletic Conference golf second team.

Hamamoto, a junior, transferred last year from Air Force. This season, he had three top-10 finishes and was fourth at the WAC Championships.

Southern Methodist's Will Dodson was named WAC Player of the Year. SMU coach Jay Loar was Coach of the Year. Matt Hastings of Boise State was Freshman of the Year.

Hamamoto is a 2002 graduate of Waiakea High.



AIDS CHARITY WALK

Fund-raiser May 15

More than 50 teams have signed up for the Starbucks AIDS Walk for Life, the primary fund-raiser for the Life Foundation, scheduled for Sunday at Kapi'olani Park.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the walk starting at 9 a.m.

Walkers can register as individuals or teams. Registration forms/sponsor sheets are available at Starbucks locations or by calling 521-2437 or downloading at www.aidswalkhawaii.org.

The Life Foundation provides services for nearly 600 HIV-positive individuals in Hawai'i.
