Trias spreads her wings on album sampler

By Wayne Harada

Wonder no more: Jasmine Trias, Hawai'i's "American Idol" finalist, is previewing her forthcoming debut CD with an 11-tune album sampler (and more) that could put her on the playlists of major radio stations, here and abroad. No pitch problems; and bold new tunes. The disc, frankly, makes her Pizza Hut single sound quite pedestrian.

Jasmine Trias

First off, Trias has shelved her ballad orientation and has opted instead for an edgier and hipper sound, a contemporary hybrid that mixes rhythm 'n' blues, soul and pop elements. The CD, due July 12 on the Clockwork Entertainment Label, likely will surprise Trias' fans, who watched her finish third on Fox-TV's "American Idol" last season behind Diana DeGarmo and winner Fantasia Barrino.

But at www.myspace.com/jasmine_trias, Trias surfs in the waters of Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and, perhaps, in the groove of Beyonce and Destiny's Child. Relying on multiple voice tracks, chic arrangements and fresh compositions by the likes of Diane Warren (whose hits include Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me," Aguilera's "I Turn to You," Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" and Gloria Estefan's "Live for Loving You") and Rodney Jerkins (who has either written for or produced sessions with Britney Spears, Luther Vandross, Keys, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna and Jennifer Lopez), Trias is primed to get noticed well beyond her "Idol" following.

If you're traveling, you might be able to catch her live at 4 p.m. June 4 at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif., or at 11 a.m. Aug. 8 at the Metro Convention Center in Toronto.
