UH sprinter Monroe earns WAC honor

University of Hawai'i sprinter Tasha Monroe, who set a school record in the 400 meters at the Occidental Invitational Saturday, was named Western Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week yesterday.

Monroe, a senior from Markham, Ontario, established a lifetime best in winning the 400 in 53.81 seconds. It was an NCAA Regional qualifying mark and broke the previous UH record of 54.29 set in 1982 by Angela Williams.

Monroe also won the 200 in 24.06, which ranks second on UH's all-time list.

The Rainbow Wahine will compete in the WAC Outdoor Championships starting tomorrow in Tulsa, Okla.



SURFING

Ballard, Kennelly fifth

Kaua'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly tied for fifth place in the Billabong Girls Pro yesterday at Tahiti.

The final day of the contest was completed yesterday in 3- to 5-foot waves and torrential rain at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

Ballard and Kennelly were both eliminated in the quarterfinals. They each received $3,000.

Australia's Chelsea Georgeson defeated Ballard and went on to win the contest and the $10,000 first prize.

Kennelly was eliminated by world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru.

The Billabong Girls Pro was the fourth of nine events on the 2005 World Championship Tour for women.

The men's Billabong Pro Tahiti is scheduled to begin later this week at Teahupoo.



BASEBALL

Kids in control at UH

Kindergarteners through eighth-graders will have a chance to take part in various jobs during the final homestand of the University of Hawai'i baseball season this weekend.

The athletic department is conducting a "Kids In Control" promotion that allows students to take part in various functions during the games between Hawai'i and Fresno State Thursday and Friday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Students can register for the following areas:

Contest coordinator: Help UH marketing personnel with on-field contests.

H-Crew member: Assist UH personnel with game operations, such as stadium set-up and coordination of fan activities.

KKEA radio broadcaster: Join broadcaster Don Robbs in the radio booth.

KFVE TV announcer: Join broadcaster Jim Leahey and color commentator Pal Eldredge in the TV booth.

Music and sound effects coordinator: Select songs and sound effects during the game from the press box.

Promotions director: Assist marketing staff with contests, promotions and T-shirt tosses.

Public address announcer: Assist Keenan Takamori with introducing batters and announcing other game-related information.

Students may register online at HawaiiAthletics.com or sign up prior to the games. Students will be notified either through e-mail or over PA system.

UH will also honor five senior players on Saturday, the final game of the homestand. The first 1,500 entering the stadium that day will be given a team photograph.
