QUICK BITES
Curious George is morphing into a series of jelly jars

Advertiser Staff

What began in 1953 with the introduction of Howdy Doody jelly glasses continues 52 years later with Curious George.

One of the earliest partnerships between a food product and an entertainment medium came in 1952, when Welch's started printing characters from the Howdy Doody radio show on its jelly jars. Once you finished the jelly or jam, you threw away the cap and used the jar as a drinking glass.

Now Welch's has entered into an agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to reintroduce the concept with Curious George and friends from the kiddie books. The artwork will be in color this time, on grape jelly, grape jam and strawberry spread in 10-ounce collectible sizes.

For elders, a taste of Hawai'i's diversity

The Waikiki Community Center is offering elders an opportunity to learn about Hawai'i's varied cultures this summer with "Experience the Cultures of Hawai'i," a series of talks and demonstrations, tastings of ethnic specialties from kim chee to malasadas and dining experiences at local restaurants.

The Golden Summer Fun activity kicks off June 6 and continues through Aug. 12. Participants can choose five- or 10-week segments. It's like an Elder Hostel without the travel hassles. Information: Jeff Apaka,or Denice Keliikoa, 923-1802.
