Environmental training available

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Community College is looking for 60 Hawai'i high school graduates to receive free training for careers as environmental health and safety technicians.

The training will be done under a new $196,000 federal grant to HCC by the Environmental Protection Agency as part of the Brownfield Project.

Brown fields are sites where confirmed or suspected environmental contamination is preventing full use of the land. Investigation is needed as the first step to determine extent of the contamination before applying for federal grants to clean up the site.

The EPA is giving out federal money to train technicians to make assessments.

People may apply for the first of two training sessions through June 3. The fall session begins Sept. 1.

Application forms and instructions are online at http://tech.honolulu.hawaii.edu/oesm/brownfields.html. Or call project coordinator Jean Isip at HCC at 845-9450 Tuesday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
