Lehner scores 26 as Kaiser beats Roosevelt

KAHUKU — Kaiser will be seeking its first O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball championship since 1989 after a dominant 63-43 semifinal victory over Roosevelt last night.

Nicole Yoshimoto of Roosevelt, left, battles Kaiser's Jolie Yoshino for a rebound in the second quarter.

The Cougars (11-4) will play defending league champion Kahuku at 7 p.m. Friday at McKinley's Student Council Gym. The game will be televised live on OC-16. Roosevelt (6-9) will play Farrington (7-8) at 5 p.m. for third place.

Although it has been 16 years since Kaiser's previous OIA title, reaching the title game was well within the Cougars' plans considering their veteran lineup and the addition of senior shooting guard Nicole Lehner, a transfer from Sacred Hearts.

Lehner finished with a game-high 26 points last night as Kaiser jumped to a 13-2 lead and never looked back. The Cougars extended the lead to 20-5 midway through the second period, and the Rough Riders never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

"They were just outstanding — that was probably the best game anybody played against us all year," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said. "They beat us in every phase of the game: shooting, passing, ball-handling, defense, free throws ... they played a championship-caliber game."

The only thing that went wrong for the Cougars happened three hours earlier, when their bus was 45 minutes late picking them up at school. They finally arrived at Kahuku's Thomas Walker Gym at about 5 p.m., which was the scheduled tip-off time.

"We just needed time to warm up," Lehner said, and they were granted the standard 15 minutes.

The Rough Riders, meanwhile, had been waiting at Kahuku since 4:15 p.m., but Keanini said, "That's no excuse; we just didn't play well."

Lehner controlled the backcourt with outside shooting and slashing drives to the basket, and fellow guards Kehau Bangay and Jamie Nerona effectively fed posts Kilioe Ali'ifua and Sharde Pratt with assists. Defensively, Kaiser's 2-3 zone defense limited Roosevelt's scoring opportunities and held the Rough Riders to one field goal in the first period.

And, the Cougars were 25 of 29 from the free-throw line.

"I thought our girls handled everything real well," Cougars coach Lisa Mann said. "On the bus ride over, they got to rest and we talked about coming in calm and relaxed. They also did a good job by not committing fouls. It might have been our best game of the year, if not the best."
