BYUH's Hegedus NCAA II's top player

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Adrienn Hegedus was named NCAA II National Senior Player of the Year last night at the NCAA II Tournament tennis banquet in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Hegedus, who is from Hungary, has a 21-0 singles record and 19-0 doubles mark. She is a four-time first-team All-American and is ranked second nationally to BYUH teammate Jing Jing Liu in singles and top-ranked in doubles with Liu.

BYUH junior Tetyana Bula was named the West Region's Player to Watch and freshman teammate Petra Teller was selected Rookie of the Year.

Dave Porter was honored as the region's Coach of the Year after guiding the Seasiders to a 26-0 record and a 127-match winning streak.

Also honored last night were two members of the BYUH men's team. Sophomore Junyoung Kim was named the West Region's Player to Watch and freshman Jakub Huza was chosen Rookie of the Year.

The top-ranked Seasider women open defense of their NCAA II national title today against Millersville (Pa.) while the 20th-ranked men meet Kutztown (Pa.).



GOLF

Kim leads states

Waiakea High junior Christine Kim shot a 6-over-par 78 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead in the HHSAA/David Ishii Girls Golf Championships at The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course.

Sharing second at 79 are Kamehameha's Alyssa Fukuoka, Baldwin's Janya Shimomura and Waiakea's Amanda Wilson.

Defending state champion Britney Choy of Leilehua shot 86 and is tied for 21st entering today's final round.

Waiakea shot 241 to take a four-shot lead in the team competition, with Roosevelt (245) second and Kamehameha (248) third.



VOLLEYBALL

UH finishes No. 7

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team was ranked No. 7 in the final USA Today/CSTV Top 15 Division I-II poll released yesterday.

The Warriors finished the season at 19-9 after losing to Long Beach State in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinals.

Pepperdine, which won the NCAA title, was ranked No. 1, followed by UCLA, Long Beach State, Penn State, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge.
