ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Easygoing blues at the Pipeline Cafe

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Jonny Lang never got to do "MTV Unplugged" when he was a teenage blues guitar prodigy in the late 1990s. So give the guy a break when he offers up a good number of selections from his three-disc blues catalog on acoustic guitar tonight at the Pipeline Cafe.

Currently working their way through a multimonth "acoustic" tour, Lang's band isn't completely unplugged, and neither is the guitarist/vocalist.

The most easygoing 24-year-old bluesman you'll ever meet is sure to impress either way. At 7:30 tonight and Friday, tickets are $35, $40 and $55. Information: 589-1999.

Grass clippings can mulch your lawn as you mow it

"Grass-cycling" is the practice of leaving clippings on the lawn after mowing. When done properly, clippings quickly decompose and return nutrients to the soil naturally. Grass-cycling makes caring for your lawn easier and can reduce mowing time by as much as 50 percent because you don't have to bag or dispose of clippings.

When done correctly, the practice of leaving clippings on the lawn also slows water loss through evaporation and reduces the need for fertilization.

To grass-cycle properly, keep your mower blades sharp and cut grass when it is dry. Use the one-third rule — mow often enough so that no more than one-third of the grass blade is removed.

FINAL WORD

Ralph Macchio | On Hilary Swank, in the New York Post:

"Hilary played 'The Next Karate Kid' after me. She can kick my butt. ... I'd go down with her first punch to my jaw. Few Hollywood action guys could survive even one round against Hilary."
