Ann L. Clark, 91, advocate for nurses

Ann L. Clark, a registered nurse and advocate of continuing education for nurses, died May 8 at the Arcadia retirement residence. She was 91.

Clark was born Nov. 27, 1913, in Bel Air, Md., and earned degrees at Seton Hall and New York universities. She began her career as a nurse in 1935 and moved to Hawai'i in 1970.

Throughout her long career, Clark's passion was nursing education. She worked as a professor of nursing at Rutgers University, Arizona State University and the University of Hawai'i.

Clark also served as director of nursing for the Hawai'i Nurses Association and in 1982 she founded Edu-Center for Nurses, which she served as chief executive officer until five years ago.

"Ann Clark was a visionary, a true leader in every sense," said Luanne Long, HNA president. "She published 11 nursing texts. She truly was a towering figure in nursing education and everyone owes her a great debt of gratitude for what she did for nursing and healthcare in our state and nationwide."

Among her awards, Clark was named National Nurse of the Year in 1981 and Maternal Child Nurse of the Year. She also received a writing award from the American Journal of Nursing. Clark was a member of St. Andrews Cathedral, the Outdoor Circle and American Association of University Women.

A celebration of Clark's life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrews Cathedral.
