BYUH tennis teams win openers

After waiting through a lightning delay, the top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team opened defense of its NCAA II championship by thundering past Millersville (Pa.), 5-0, at Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Seasiders (27-0) swept all three doubles matches 8-0 without yielding a game and then got two 6-0, 6-0 singles victories to extend their dual-match winning streak to 128.

Adrienn Hegedus, the NCAA II Senior Player of the Year, led the BYUH blitz by beating Katie Opilo at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teaming with Jing Jing Liu to trounce Opilo and Steph Eckart, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles.

The Seasiders play eighth-ranked Columbus (Ga.) State in today's quarterfinals.

Also yesterday, the 20th-ranked BYUH men's team beat Kutztown (Pa.), 5-0, to reach today's quarterfinals against ninth-ranked North Florida.

Seasider Dillon Porter won his No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches, teaming with Junyoung Kim in doubles.

Top seeds Lim, Gora open state play today

For winning his opening match of the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State Tennis Championships, Waialua's Charles Monsell gets to play top seed Mikey Lim of Punahou today at the Central O'ahu Regional Park courts.

Monsell beat Riley Saito of Kealakehe, 6-1, 6-0, yesterday in one of 12 first-round boys singles matches. Matches were also played in boys doubles, and girls singles and doubles.

Defending girls champion Kalei Gora opens against Abby Tateishi of Seabury Hall.

Punahou is the defending boys and girls champion.

Competition continues today, starting at 8:30 a.m., and runs through Saturday.

UH heptathlete 4th after WAC's first day

University of Hawai'i freshman Bianca DeBartolo stood in fourth place in the heptathlon yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tulsa, Okla.

DeBartolo had personal-best marks in the 100 hurdles (14.76 seconds), high jump (4-11) and 200 (26.53), and threw the shot 36 feet, 1.25 inches to amass 2,841 points.

Katie Christianson of Fresno State leads with 3,217 points entering today's final three events.

The preliminary rounds of the running and field events begin tomorrow, with the finals set for Saturday.
