What's Up!

CONCERT: May 20-21

The Rick Shea Band prepares to rock around the island with a pair of concerts in May. A guitarist and vocalist, Shea's distinct California-country and Bakersfield sound stems from growing up in San Bernardino. Owana Salazar is the special guest at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center gig. Tickets: $20 advance, $25 at the door.

CONCERT: May 21-22

The Honolulu Symphony's Halekulani MasterWorks season comes to an elegant end with violinist Sarah Chang, right. Maestro Samuel Wong conducts the concerts, which also serve as a farewell tribute (he will become conductor laureate of the symphony after the season closes). Tickets are $26, $38, $48, $56 and $69.

EXPO: May 21-22

Welcome the summer season with the 5th annual Hawaii Boat Show and Ocean Expo. Have fun in and out of the water with marine and land displays of boats and marine accessories, Coast Guard helicopter sea-rescue demonstrations, harbor cruises, boat test rides, entertainment, keiki area and food. Admission is free, and parking is $5 per car.

COMEDY: May 26-27

It's not for here, it's "to go" as the Take Out Comedy Tour winds up its worldwide journey in Honolulu. The show features Asian-American stand-up comics Joey Guila, Shecky Wong, right, Ed Cho, Shawn Felipe, PK and Jami Gong. Local boy Paul Ogata headlines. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 advance, $25 at the door, for 18 and older. The May 27 show is sold out, but tickets remain for the added May 26 date.

COMEDY: May 28

Comedy showcase Make Me Laugh 5 heads for the west side again for more chuckles and giggles. Local favorite Andy Bumatai, left, headlines, and he will be joined by Kento, Brian Min and Mo Dixon. Jeff Kino hosts. Tickets are $20 advance and $25 at the door.

CONCERT: June 7

The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a star-studded bash, "Na 'Ilina." The concert features a plethora of local performers, including Harry Soria, Nina Keali'iwahamana, Mahi and Gaye Beamer, Kahauanu Lake Singers and Emma Veary. The pre-show starts at 7 p.m. with Pa'ahana. A post-show follows with an opportunity to meet the artists, plus music by Paul Martinez and Na Hokupa. Tickets: $20-$25.

STAGE: June 1-19

And here's to Mrs. Robinson and the rest of the players in Manoa Valley Theatre's Hawai'i premiere of the dramedy "The Graduate." The stage adaptation of this popular novel and classic film follows recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock on a sexual odyssey with his girlfriend and her mom. Justin Brossier is Benjamin and Patrice Scott plays Mrs. Robinson. Betty Burdick directs. Tickets are $25 general, with a $5 discount for seniors and military. Those 25 and younger enter for $15.

FESTIVAL: June 4-5

The 13th annual Pow Wow prepares to get under way with Native American dancing, drumming, singing, arts, crafts and food. Hosted by the Intertribal Council of Hawaii, the event serves as a gathering place for Native Americans from Hawai'i, the Mainland and Canada to celebrate modern and traditional culture. Admission is free.

EXPO: May 21-22

The 8th annual New Baby Expo is back to celebrate and cherish those little bundles of joy. More than 150 booths will be on hand featuring all kinds of goodies. Special features include Nanny on the Net, Baby Signs with Aloha, Gymboree Play Area, Kindermusik classes, Baby Crawling Contest and Hawaii's Largest Baby Shower. Admission is $4.50 general and free for those 5 and younger.

FESTIVAL: June 15-19

Registration is now open for the 2005 Summer Solstice Fire Tribe Gathering festival. This multi-day community celebration features song, chant, dance, drumming, poetry, visual art and spontaneous sacred ceremony. Early registration ends today, with late registration open through June 10. Fees are $50 and up, based on number of days attending, choice of accommodations and optional meal plan.

STAGE: June 16-26

Let those friendly neighbors of Sesame Street sweep those clouds away for a rainbow of fun at "Elmo's Coloring Book." Elmo, Zoe, Oscar, Big Bird and the rest of the gang come and play during a vibrantly energetic Sesame Street Live show exploring the world of colors. Tickets are $11 and $15, with some $19 premium seats available. On opening night, all seats are $11.

The Waikiki Aquarium's Ke Kani O Ke Kai summer concert series, featuring entertainment and food booths:

Moonlight Mele

There's another concert series, too. The Bishop Museum's Moonlight Mele on the Lawn series begins June 16 with the trio Maunalua. Other concerts feature Ho'okena and Da Braddahs, July 21; and The Makaha Sons, Aug. 11 Food and drinks will be available, and the museum's exhibits will be open for viewing. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the general public, 5:30 p.m. for museum members. Tickets are $15 general, $10 museum members and Bank of Hawaii customers and employees; $5 for kids 4-12. 848-4187.
