Baldwin's Lusk leads Neighbor Islands' charge

By Leila Wai
Advertiser Staff Writer

If Baldwin sophomore June Ann Lusk wins any medals at tomorrow's state meet, the first thing she'll probably do is mail them to Houston.

It's where her grandfather, Bob Lusk, is receiving treatment for cancer, and awaiting news of how she does.

"He's behind me all the way; he feels like he's running my races, too," said Lusk, at the HHSAA/Island Movers State Track and Field Championships trials yesterday at Mililani High School.

The championship finals are tomorrow, with the field events starting at 3:30 p.m. and running events at 5:40 p.m., at Mililani High.

"He's really fighting (the cancer)," said Lusk, who ran 12.25 in the 100 meters, setting the meet record previously held by Cassie Coffin of St. Anthony, who ran 12.32 in 1999.

"I was really shocked, because I didn't think that was my best time," Lusk said of her record. "Maybe I can go faster. It really hasn't hit me yet."

Lusk is dedicating her season to her "Papa," and said "At the (Maui Interscholastic League championships), I won all four races and I sent him my medals," Lusk said. "I hope he keeps fighting, and I will too.

"I found out he cried. I like to know I touched him in that kind of way."

She also was the top qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles (15.64) and qualified second in the 300-meter hurdles (48.00) and 200-meter dash (25.74).

Overall it was a great day for Neighbor Island schools, which had several athletes qualifying for the finals with top times.

Kealakehe senior Fran Weems was the top qualifier in the 200 (25.54) and 400 (58.30) and finished second in the 100 (12.39).

Ka'u's Sarah Nicolaisen was the top finisher in the 300 hurdles (46.93), and finished behind Lusk in the 100-meter hurdles (16.34).

On the boys side, top qualifiers from the neighbor islands were Waimea's Troy Yamase in the 100 (10.94), Kamehameha-Hawai'i's Reece Alnas in the long jump (21-9.5), Hawai'i Prep's Daniel Teo-Nesheim in the shot put (58-0), Hawai'i Prep's Collin Saxby in the 400-meter dash (50.47), Joseph Locey of Kapa'a in the 200 (22.04), and Hilo's Kekoa Chavez in the 300 hurdles (40.18). Waimea's 4x100 team also earned a top seed Saturday, finishing in 43.35 seconds.

Hawai'i Baptist junior Lauren Ho finished first in all three events she ran in: the 800 (2:21.43), 1,500 (4:57.52) and 3,000 (10:49.97).

Several records appear to be close to being broken. Hawai'i Prep's Teo-Nesheim threw 59 feet earlier in the season, and will go after the shot put record of 59-8.75 set by Punahou's Kaione Crabb in 1997. Word of Life's Brashton Satele threw 184-7 yesterday, but threw 187-10 earlier in the season. The record is 186 feet by Kahuku's Jerrod Avegalio in 2003.
