UH-Hilo loses opener at NCAA tournament

The Hawai'i-Hilo women's softball team recorded just four hits in a 2-0 loss to San Francisco State in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regional yesterday in Carson, Calif.

The Vulcans (31-10) will play host Cal State Dominguez Hills (45-11) in an elimination game today at Toro Diamond at 6 a.m. (Hawai'i time). The game will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.waldcast.net.

All-American Sonja Garnett (26-7) struck out eight and walked one in the complete-game victory for the Gators (37-18). UH-Hilo, which entered hitting .334, played its first game since April 23.

"You could see that our bats were slow," UH-Hilo coach Callen Perreira said. "We couldn't get around on the inside stuff. We're normally a really good hitting team when a pitcher throws hard."

In the sixth inning with runners on second and third with no outs, Garnett struck out three consecutive Vulcans to preserve a 2-0 lead.

UH-Hilo's Leo Sing Chow, the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year, allowed two runs — one unearned — on five hits and one walk in six innings. Sing Chow (9-4) struck out five. She allowed a two run-scoring singles to Chrissy Hildebrandt.

Correction

The subhead in yesterday's UH baseball article did not reflect what was in the story. The article said only Fresno State could win its nine remaining games and theoretically not win the WAC title if Rice also sweeps its nine remaining games.
