Filipino pride — with all its cultural, visual and gastronomical diversity — will be on view during today's Filipino Fiesta parade and festival in Waikiki. Simply put, it's a wonderful opportunity to explore the arts, cuisine and lifestyle of Hawai'i's Filipino community.

In the 2002 parade, Queen Alyssa Marie rode with some of her friends on the float representing the San Nicholas Goodwill Foundation, part of the 11th Annual Filipino Fiesta and Parade. This year's parade begins at 9 a.m. at Fort DeRussy.

"What we hope to convey to people who don't know is how extremely diverse our Filipino culture is," said Bryan Andaya, an attorney, who is fiesta chairman. "We're not just one single entity, like most Eastern or Asian cultures. We're made up from different regions, and the culture is dependent on the environment where you live — the regions are reflected quite differently. What you wear, what you eat, what you dance depends on where you live."

About 20,000 attended last year; organizers anticipate attracting as many, or more, this year — the 13th annual. The festival is being presented by the Filipino Community Center.

What's on tap:

• A parade, starting 9 a.m., from Fort DeRussy to Kapi'olani Park, along Kalakaua Avenue, with about 200 participants, including Mayor Mufi Hannemann as grand marshal, accompanied by the Royal Hawaiian Band, and about 10 floats utilizing the fiesta theme, "Providing a Guiding Light for Our Youth," in a float competition.

• Food, including pork and chicken adobo, pinakbet (stew-like vegetable and meat dish), lechon (roast pork), lumpia — plus desserts such as bibingka and halo-halo.

• Songs and dances, by the Honolulu Broadway Company featuring Gavin Vinta, Fool Around Kine, Abeth Insong and Ati-Atihan; Brickwood Galuteria emcees.

Various regions of the Philippines reflect their cultures in clothing, dance and food. What will you see at the festival today?

• Stardust, in the form of visiting Filipino actress Joy Bisco (from the Filipino-American film "The Debut") and singing star Rachel Alejandro (at 3 p.m.).

• Demos and lessons in the tinikling dance of the Philippines, where dancers hop in and out of the paths of clicking bamboo poles; performances of the fandado sa ilaw (candles or water in glasses, balanced on the head).

• Arts and crafts, including basket-weaving from the Ilocos region known for straw hats.

• A regional village, showcasing the different provinces of the Philippines.

Andaya said that the festival had hoped to lure "American Idol" finalist Jasmine Trias, but "there were scheduling conflicts," he said. "But maybe next year?"
