Jews to celebrate Israel anniversary

Hawai'i's Jewish community will gather to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the establishment of the state of Israel on May 22.

The free event, which takes place 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include music, dance and ethnic foods at the Honolulu Civic Center, the outdoor grassy area next to Honolulu Hale. Free parking will be at the Alapai Street underground lot. Performers include the Israeli band Sunlight from Los Angeles, the Ruach Band and the Hawaii Israel Recreational Dance Group. Jewish organizations (Aloha Jewish Chapel, Chabad of Hawai'i, Temple Emanu-El, and Congregation Sof Ma'arav) will participate and volunteers will answer questions about Jewish belief and customs, Israeli history and culture. There will also be crafts and souvenirs.

Buddha festival today, tomorrow

The Buddha Birthday Festival, sponsored by Hawaii Buddhist Culture Society and Buddha's Light International Association, will be held today and tomorrow at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza.

The event begins at 10 a.m. both days with a parade and includes lion and dragon dances, martial arts performances, entertainment, arts and crafts and a variety of food booths.

Peace prayers held at mission

Every third Sunday, the Buddhist group at the Jodo Mission, 1429 Makiki St., holds a peace prayer at 9:30 a.m.

The prayer tomorrow will be led by Ernestine Enomoto, talking about "Peace in the Now — Wow!"

She's a follower of Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen monk who started a peace walk during the Vietnam War. Enomoto, a professor of education at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, will lead the meditation in her tradition, the Honolulu Mindfulness Community.

Clergy to gather at Blaisdell Arena

Transformation Hawai'i will be held Friday and next Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena.

Participants from the clergy (among them the Rev. Marc Alexander, diocesan theology for the Catholic church here, Pastor Ralph Moore of Hope Chapel, Pastor Cal Chinen of Moanalua Gardens Missionary Church) and from business arenas (Don Horner of First Hawaiian Bank, Mitch D'Olier of Kaneohe Ranch) and others will participate in the event, which focuses on "marketplace ministry."

'Forgiveness' workshop set

The Spiritual Life Center is presenting the workshop "Forgiveness to Freedom," with the Rev. Hal Weidner, pastor of Holy Trinity Church and head of the Oratory religious order here, at 9:30 a.m. on May 21.

The workshop will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1020 S. Beretania St., in the Maile Room on the second floor of the education building.

Cost is $20.
