Iolani rallies to claim ILH's 2nd state berth
Advertiser Staff
Freshman guard Chanel Hirata sank a shot from about 10 feet away with 2.8 seconds remaining last night to lift Iolani to a 42-41 girls basketball victory over Maryknoll at McCabe Gym, a victory that earned the Raiders the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's second and final Division I state tournament berth.
The Spartans made a long inbounds pass and got a shot off as time expired, but the ball rattled around the rim and fell out.
After Maryknoll (7-5) jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the first period, Iolani (10-2) cut it to 27-25 by halftime. The Spartans led 31-25 entering the final quarter, only to see the Raiders rally and eventually take the lead.
Maryknoll guard Nicole Fu made a driving layup to put the Spartans up, 41-40, with 25 seconds left. Hirata then hit the game-winner for her only basket of the night.
It was Iolani's third victory over Maryknoll in ILH play, although the Raiders had to rally for each one. On April 12, Iolani came back from a halftime deficit to win, 43-41, and on April 30, the Raiders trailed by 19 points in the fourth period before winning, 51-48.
