Top seeds advance at state tennis

Top seeds Mikey Lim of Punahou and Kalei Gora of St. Francis advanced to the finals of the HHSAA/Carlsmith Ball State Tennis Championships yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Lim defeated Buffanblu teammate Alex Ching, the No. 6 seed, 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Lim beat Hilo's Aaron Tada (No. 11), 6-2, 6-1.

Gora beat No. 10 Sara Yoshinaga of Iolani, 6-0, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she beat No. 6 Audra Takara of Mililani, 6-0, 6-1.

In today's final, Lim will face No. 8 seed Daniel Llarenas of Word of Life, who swept teammate Colin Fujishige (No. 3) in the quarterfinals and Iolani's Torin Ching (No. 5) in semifinals.

Gora will face No. 2 seed Heidi Kaloi of Kamehameha-O'ahu in the final. Kaloi swept Hawai'i Prep's Megan Pautler in the quarterfinals and Punahou's Sheena David (No. 4) in the semifinals.

In the boys doubles final, Punahou's Andrew Mau and Will Grosswendt (No. 7) will meet Kamehameha-O'ahu's Sean Tomas and Bryce Silva (No. 3).

In the girls doubles finals, Kamehameha-O'ahu's Brooke Doane and Lauren Shin (No. 1 seed) will play Moanalua's Julienne Yamamoto and Joelle Yamamoto (No. 2).



BYUH women in final

The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team beat No. 5 Barry (Fla.), 5-0, yesterday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II National Championships at Altamonte Springs, Fla.

BYU-Hawai'i won the three doubles matches and the No. 1 and No. 4 singles. The other matches were abandoned.

The Seasiders improved to 29-0 this season and have won 130 consecutive dual matches.

The Seasiders will meet No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) in today's final at 8 a.m. (Hawai'i time).



Hilo's season is over

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team's season came to an end yesterday after it blew a four-run lead and lost 9-8 in eight innings to Cal State Dominguez Hills at the NCAA West Regional at Carson, Calif.

The Vulcans, who lost both games at the regional, ended the season with a 31-11 record.

Hilo took an 8-4 lead after three innings, but the host Toros scored five runs over the final three innings.

Dominguez Hills (46-11) scored the go-ahead run on a two-out walk to Cindy Perry, who stole second base. Jennifer Wilson singled to second base to drive in Perry.

The Vulcans got home runs from Haunani Haasenritter, Leo Sing Chow, Natalie Fujimoto and Meghan Jost.



Two Rainbows honored

University of Hawai'i junior Bryan Lake and freshman Tinja Anderson-Mitterling made the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association all-district team.

Lake, a three-time All-American, was named to the coed team as a skipper.

He led Hawai'i to a share of the PCIYRA Dinghy Championship and a runner-up finish at the PCIYRA Team Racing Championship.

Anderson-Mitterling made the women's team.

She helped Hawai'i to a fourth-place finish at the PCIYRA Women's Spring Championships and a fifth-place finish at the fall championships.



Chun leads Jennie K.

Mari Chun shot a 5-under-par 67 yesterday to take a nine-stroke lead after the first round of the Jennie K. Wilson Invitational at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Ayaka Kaneko is second, and defending champion Amanda Wilson and Marcie Rudich are third with 77s.

The second round starts at 7 a.m. today.



Hawai'i fifth at WAC

The University of Hawai'i women's team is in fifth place at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tulsa, Okla.

Hawai'i, which has never finished higher than eighth in its four previous WAC championships, has 25 points.

Rice leads with 46 points.

Hawai'i's Meghan Weaver finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14.61 meters.

Dana Buchanan placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:14.71.

Today's competition will start at 1:30 p.m. (Hawai'i time).
