The Dark Side: a wife's perspective

 •  Feel the Force
 •  Test your 'Star Wars' savvy

Editor's note: When we asked readers if they knew any "Star War" fanatics, we received interesting responses. A sample from one of the letters: It's bad enough that my 28-year-old husband collects "Star Wars" memorabilia (or as I like to call it, "Star Wars" crap) but now he's taken my 3-year-old son over to the dark side as well. On any given day, you'll find my husband and son playing with, collecting, or watching anything and everything "Star Wars." Is this normal? Growing up in the '80s, my husband had all of the toys you could think of, but of course, mom threw them out or sold them off at the soccer fund-raiser long ago (probably for a quarter or something painfully cheap by today's comparison).

Now, in attempt to reclaim his childhood, perhaps, andÊtrain his young Jedi (also known as our son Reece) my husband is on a mission to reclaim his favorite "Star Wars" toys from yesteryear. What EVER did I get myself into?!

On more than one occasion, I have found Brandon engaged in an eBay bidding-war frenzy at 3 a.m. How many times have I discovered some mystery package containing a mint in-package Yoda or Darth Vader discreetly placed at the top of his closet, carefully hidden away from his nagging, penny-pinching wife. (For the record, these items go for high $400's or so) or the enormous boxed ATAT that just hangs out around the house.

It's never been played with, never been touched and it doesn't really do anything (except collect dust). And that's just the big kid.

The little kid is just as bad. For Christmas, Brandon got Reece the Playskool Preschooler's version of the "Star Wars" saga. You should see baby Chewbacca and R2 and the tyke's mini version of the Millennium Falcon (complete with 3P0's recorded voice). Who thinks of making this stuff?! Wallets, toys, clothes, shoes — how much have we spent?

Now, with the final installment of "Star Wars," I'm sure the boys will be going all-out. It's nice that my husband has something to share from his childhood with our son, but couldn't he have chosen something less costly?

They're both excited for the last movie. I think they're planning on a "Star Wars" movie marathon before going to the big show. Leave me out of that, I've spent too much time and money on supporting the Star Wars habit. (But don't throw out my Princess Leia costume just yet ...)
