Alumni invited to UH campus

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Colleges of Arts & Sciences and the Colleges of Arts & Sciences Alumni Association have planned two days of campus activities for the reunions of the classes of 1945, 1955, 1965, 1975, 1985 and 1995.

"Back to Manoa Day" will take place 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. "U.H. in the Community Day" will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. next Sunday.

Among the activities will be Trivial Pursuit hosted by OC16's Baraquio sisters, a musical performance by graduate student Aaron Sala, lectures by news anchors Paula Akana and Howard Dashefsky and U.H. researcher Maqsudal Alam, a campus trolley tour, silent auction and reception, tours of the new Medical Education Building in Kaka'ako, behind-the-scenes tour of Waikiki Aquarium and a lunch prepared by culinary arts students of Kapi'olani Community College.

County observes Police Week

HILO, Hawai'i — The Hawai'i County Police Department is celebrating Police Week this week with a ceremony at its Hilo headquarters and tours of police stations throughout the Big Island.

Police Week, celebrated nationally since 1962, is observed to honor police officers killed in the line of duty. A public ceremony is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow at police headquarters, 349 Kapi'olani St. in Hilo, with entertainment by Ke Ola Pono and the Hilo High School Viking Band. The Hilo High Army Junior ROTC will present the colors to open the event.

Four Hawai'i County officers who died on duty will be honored: Manuel Cadinha, who was killed in 1918, William "Red" Oili (1936), Ronald "Shige" Jitchaku (1990) and Kenneth Keliipio (1997).

The Law Referral & Information Service is a public service provided by the Hawai'i State Bar Association and is the only bar-sponsored attorney referral in the state. Its member attorneys assist clients with all types of legal problems, including family, employment, criminal, traffic, wills, real estate, Social Security, discrimination and more.

Wining posters at Honolulu Hale

Winning posters from the "Sew a Lei for Memorial Day" poster contest will be exhibited on the Third Floor of Honolulu Hale through May 31.

The winners were chosen from more than 602 entries from public and private schools throughout the state. The artwork of the first-place winners will appear on posters encouraging the public to provide lei to decorate graves at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl for the Memorial Day service.

First-place winners are:

• Nicholas Simon, Pa'auilo Elementary, fouth grade.

• Ayako Linden, Our Redeemer Lutheran School, eighth grade.

• Merry Pham, Farrington High School, 12th grade.



Lei needed for Memorial Day

Fifty thousand lei are needed for placement on graves of veterans on Memorial Day. Lei can be dropped off on May 27 at designated community parks and fire stations on O'ahu, the Parks Permit Office in Honolulu, and at Kapolei Hale Room 309.

All lei must be made of fresh flowers or ti leaves and must measure 20 to 24 inches before tying. Loose plumeria flowers also will be accepted on May 26 at the same locations. For information about donating lei, call the Department of Parks and Recreation at 692-5106.

Lei can be dropped off on May 27 between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at these locations:

• Halawa District Park

• Makua Ali'i Senior Center

Language series seeks volunteers

Producers of a new Hawaiian language televison series to be subtitled in English are seeking volunteers to participate in program development focus groups. Sessions will be held in Honolulu and Hilo over the next few weeks.

During each half-hour session participants will discuss content, story ideas, Hawaiian language issues and program development.

The series is being produced for broadcast on PBS locally and in select Mainland markets.
