The House voted Wednesday 279-144 for the Gang Deterrence and Community Protection Act, which would prosecute gangs as organized crime groups and set new mandatory minimum prison sentences for gang members.

1. Highway spending
The Senate on Wednesday voted 76-22 to waive a budget rule and permit several billion dollars to be added to a bill to fund highway construction for six years.
Hawai'i votes
Daniel Akaka (D) YEA;
Dan Inouye (D) YEA
The House will begin working this week on spending bills for the upcoming fiscal year. On the agenda are the $31.9 billion Homeland Security bill and a $26.1 billion measure for the Interior Department. The Senate expects to wrap up work on the $295 billion highway and mass transit bill, then delve into the controversial matter of judicial nominations.
