POLICE BEAT
Road flares blamed in morning blaze

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu firefighters say evidence backs up the assertion that some of the numerous brush fires on the leeward coast have been deliberately set.

Four fire companies and a tanker truck were sent about 1:40 a.m. today to a park near Honokai Hale to put out a brush fire that burned about two acres.

It took firefighters nearly two hours to put out the blaze.

"When they first got there, they found three road flares still burning in the brush," said Capt. Kenison Tejada, a Fire Department spokesman. "Since they didn't find any disabled cars in the brush, it's fairly evident how this one started."

Police and fire officials believe a week-long brush fire in Nanakuli Valley, which charred more than 2,200 acres and threatened area homes several times, was the work of an arsonist.

Officials contend that most of the brush fires that plague the area during the dry summer months, are deliberately set.

ATM customer kidnapped, robbed

Police are looking for a man who kidnapped another man near an automatic teller machine in Honolulu last night and then robbed him.

The robbery victim said he withdrew money from an ATM about 9:05 p.m. and walked back to his car, leaving the door open.

He said a man approached the car, pulled a knife, forced his way in on the driver's side and drove off.

The victim said he handed over the cash from the ATM but that the robber demanded more money as he drove the robbery victim's car toward the victim's home.

The victim told police he was able to get out of the car and run from the robber who also got out and ran, taking the victim's car keys with him.

Strong-armed robbers arrested

Police arrested two men, ages 18 and 19, who are suspected of robbing two 18-year-olds about 1:20 p.m. yesterday in Kalihi.

The two robbery victims told police they were walking on the street when the two men approached them, demanded their belongings and then used force to take a wallet from one of the victims.

Police were called and quickly found the two robbers. The victim's wallet was recovered. Both men who were robbed suffered minor injuries, police said.
