Health insurer's rate cut OK'd

The state Insurance Division has approved an average decrease of 18 percent in the health insurance rates of Summerlin Life & Health Insurance Co. of Las Vegas, which began operating in Hawai'i last summer. The rates take effect July 1. Insurance commissioner J.P. Schmidt said that doesn't necessarily mean Summerlin's rates will be 18 percent less than its competitors', but that it will make their prices "very competitive."
Lowe's said its planned hardware store in Iwilei is expected to open in the second quarter of 2008. The nation's second-largest home improvement retailer said the store on Pacific Street will generate as many as 175 new jobs.
Hawai'i was rated a B for overall financial security of its households, according to a study by the Corporation for Enterprise Development, a nonprofit economic research firm in Washington, D.C.
The state got C's for finances, business development and home ownership. It received an A in healthcare and a B in education. Hawai'i came in ninth-highest nationwide in net worth, and fourth-lowest in bankruptcies filed.
Hawaiian Airlines said yesterday it will start daily nonstop service between Ho-nolulu and San Jose on Oct. 1. In California, Hawaiian flies to San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.
