Freshman post Jamie Smith scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and junior point guard Hennasea-Sue Tokumura added 11 points and four steals last night to lead the Raiders to a 66-43 win over Farrington in first-round action at the University of Hawai'i's Stan Sheriff Center.

Iolani (11-2) will play O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion and No. 3 seed Kahuku (14-1) in tonight's feature quarterfinal at 8, following the 6 p.m. clash between perennial power Kalaheo (14-2) and defending state champion Konawaena (13-0).

"Kahuku is very physical but also very refined and they can run with the ball, too," said Iolani coach Glenn Takara, whose team defeated the Red Raiders by three points in a nonleague game about two months ago. "It's going to come down to who makes their shots."

Farrington, which scored a double-overtime nonleague victory over Iolani in March, started hot last night and led 11-5 midway through the first period. But the Raiders answered with an 8-0 run to lead 13-11 early in the second quarter.

Keilyn Fujioka sank two free throws and Smith made a layup with under a minute remaining to give Iolani a 27-20 halftime lead.

The Governors cut it to 29-26 on Byanna Tatupu-Leopoldo's short jumper two minutes into the second half, but Marci Kang's layup started a 12-2 run for the Raiders, who led 45-32 entering the final period.

Smith then opened the fourth quarter with a layup and two free throws and fellow post Alana Wall followed with two free throws and a short jumper as Iolani used a 13-3 run to put the game away.

"We tried to use everybody and keep the pace up the whole game," Takara said. "When we lost to them, they just pounded it into their bigger girls, and we knew they had some shooters, too, so tonight we tried to get them out of their offense. We wanted to keep moving, keep the pressure on and hope they get out of their flow."

Farrington finished the game just 17 of 51 (33 percent) from the field and converted only 6 of 15 free-throw attempts. By contrast, the Raiders were 22 of 52 (42.3 percent) from the field and 18 of 23 (78.3 percent) from the line.

Fujioka contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for Iolani, which had 12 steals.

Tanya Sale led the Governors with 10 points.
