McGuigan sets saves mark for San Francisco

 •  Friends turn foes for NCAA softball tourney

San Francisco junior right-hander Patrick McGuigan, a 2002 graduate of Mid-Pacific, set the school's single-season saves record with his seventh in a 4-1 win over Portland on Saturday.

McGuigan went the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up no runs on three hits while striking out three.

Senior second baseman Royce Fukuroku (Maui '01) batted 2 for 3, including his eighth double of the season, and scored twice.



More Baseball

• Washington State junior third baseman Zach McAngus (Kamehameha '02) hit a solo home run in a 7-2 loss to Southern California on Sunday. It was his second homer of the season.

• Pepperdine senior right-hander Kea Kometani (Punahou '01 of Honolulu) worked 7 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned), while walking four and striking out seven in a 9-4 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday.

Kometani has 219 strikeouts in his career, ninth on the school's all-time list.

• Hartnell (Salinas, Calif.) Community College freshman pitcher Marc Nobriga (Saint Louis '04) was named the Coast Conference South Division Pitcher of the Year.

Sophomore utility Chris Balatico (Mililani '03) and freshman catcher Jowen Murray-Thornton (Saint Louis '04) were named to the first team, and freshman infielder Jake Oketani (Kaua'i) was named to the second team.

Chabot (Hayward, Calif.) freshman J.J. Pacheco (St. Anthony '04) was also named to the second team.

• Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, Idaho) senior catcher Gavin Concepcion (Pearl City '01) had three hits, including two doubles, in a 7-0 victory over Whitworth on May 8, helping to extend the school's winning streak to 16.

• Diablo Valley (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) freshman first baseman Kepa Wong ('Aiea '04) was named to the Bay Valley West All-Conference first team as a designated hitter. He was also named the team's MVP, according to his mother, Leinaala Wong.

• Hawai'i players at Chicago State are leading the team in several categories:

Sophomore shortstop Jonathan Sakurai (Aiea '03) leads the team in stolen bases (38), runs (33) and on-base percentage (.450), and is tied for first in hits (59).

Freshman pitcher Chris Freshour (Mid-Pacific of Ho-nolulu) leads in strikeouts (35).

Freshman left fielder Chris Goya (Mid-Pacific '04 of Kane'ohe) leads in batting average (.354).

Freshman catcher Aaron "Pono" Moises (Saint Louis of Mililani) leads in catching runners stealing (10).

• Taft (Calif.) College freshman catcher Pikake Nutter-Gaudet (Leilehua) was named the Diamond Catcher of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, and was also selected as a California Junior College All-American for Northern California by the organization.

Taft freshman pitcher/first baseman Alexis San Nicolas (Leilehua '04) was also named a California Junior College All-American for Northern California by the NFCA. San Nicolas was also named to the All-State team, which was omitted from last week's Homegrown Report.

• Portland State sophomore outfielder Kimi Daniel (Sacred Hearts '03) earned All-Pacific Coast Conference honorable-mention honors.

• Redlands (Calif.) senior Courtney Cho (Kamehameha '01 of 'Aiea) was selected as a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete. Cho, an accounting/business major, played softball and volleyball.



Women's Golf

• Puget Sound sophomore Emily Lau (Iolani '03 of Honolulu) tied for 18th at the NCAA Division III Women's Championships that concluded Friday at the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in North Carolina. Lau shot 83-84-82-85—334.



Men's Volleyball

• Lewis (Romeoville, Ill.) freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Michael China (Punahou of Honolulu) earned the Brother David Delahanty Student Athlete Award for academic excellence. China was presented a bronze medallion for having a cumulative GPA between 3.25 and 3.499.



Men's Bowling

• Chad Uyehara (Hawai'i Baptist '03), Ivan Miyasato ('Aiea '01) and Cy Hiyane (Moanalua '04) helped Fresno State place second at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships, April 20 to 23 at Rockford, Ill.

Miyasato earned National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association All-America first-team honors, and Uyehara was named to the NCBCA Academic All-America team with a cumulative GPA of 3.85.
