Gas prices again highest in nation

Hawai'i's gasoline prices again are the highest in the nation, according to yesterday's AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

Statewide, the average cost of regular gasoline was $2.530 a gallon, versus an average of $2.521 in California. California's prices, which were higher than Hawai'i's for several months, have generally fallen since peaking at $2.646 a gallon in mid-April.

Hawai'i's average price remains just below a peak of $2.554 a gallon hit in mid-May.



Hilton Hotels buys 112 acres

Hilton Hotels Corp. said yesterday it has acquired 112 acres of undeveloped land on the Big Island from Waikoloa Development Co. for $65 million. Plans to develop the land are under consideration, the company said in a news release.

The company, the third-largest U.S. hotel company, has more than 500 Hilton-branded hotels worldwide.



3 new directors on board at bank

First Hawaiian Bank has added three members to its board of directors: Robert Hiam, president of Hawaii Medical Service Association; Faye Kurren, president of Hawaii Dental Services; and Dee Jay Mailer, CEO of Kamehameha Schools.



4 firms vie for Kapolei project

Four companies are competing for the opportunity to develop affordable housing on three vacant parcels totaling approximately 20 acres in the Villages of Kapolei.

The contenders from Hawai'i are Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii Inc. and D.R. Horton-Schuler Division. Contenders from California are Enhanced Affordable Development Company LLC and UniDev LLC.

The Housing and Community Development Corp. of Hawai'i expects to make a decision by July.



A first for Aloha Airlines

Aloha Airlines has become the first airline in the nation to sign a consent order with the Environmental Protection Agency ensuring the continued safety of drinking water aboard its aircraft, the airline said. Aloha in November was one of 12 airlines to agree in principle to new water testing and disinfection protocols.
