Windward group planning classes

Windward Families for R.E.A.L. (Resources and Early Access to Learning) will offer age-specific classes for parents and infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

The free 90-minute classes are held once a week for 10 weeks and include parent

/child interaction activities and a parent discussion/support group. While parents talk, children play and learn in an age-appropriate classroom.

The next session runs from Sept. 6 to Nov. 10, with two more sessions beginning in December and March.

Music training for educators

Early-childhood educators can attend two music and movement summer workshops by Mary Louise Wilson, a teacher for Musikgarten.

The workshop will educate teachers about the benefits of music and movement in the curriculum, and how children learn music.

The workshops will take place July 5 to 9 at Mililani High School.

Public-school teachers can receive up to six professional development credits for attending the classes.

Punahou student wins essay prize

George Bogden of Punahou School has been named the state winner in the 18th annual National Peace Essay Contest sponsored by the United Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.

He will receive $1,000 and will compete for national awards of up to $10,000.

Bogden will represent Hawai'i in Washington from June 18 to 23, where he and other state winners will meet with senior U.S. government and foreign embassy officials, members of Congress and other experts involved in American foreign policy.
