Tonight's Must-See

Tonight on KHNL News 8

KHNL News 8 Meteorologist Sharie Shima is out and about on this Aloha Friday, it's part of our special report, "Friday Night Live." Plus, KHNL News 8's Lyle Galdeira goes shopping in this week's "Lucky you live Hawai'i."

"The Muppets' Wizard of Oz," 7 p.m., ABC. The classic tale is slightly updated here, but it keeps its traditional charm. We're still in Kansas but now Dorothy (Ashanti) is a diner waitress. She's desperate to become a singing star but Aunt Em (Queen Latifah) has her doubts. Then comes the tornado, the squashed witch and more. Kermit plays the Scarecrow and Fozzie is the Cowardly Lion, afraid to try his stand-up jokes. Gonzo is a tin robot whose heart has been removed. Miss Piggy plays all three witches. There are some wonderfully funny moments from the Muppets, who seem perfect for Oz. The only flaw is in the music. Despite having two great singers, this version has only a few songs, most of them brief and bland. Other than that, this is a fun trek to Oz and back.

Of Note

"Shallow Hal" (2001), 7 p.m., Fox. Jack Black stars as a shallow sort who's obsessed with women's outer images. Then he's given a spell and can only see his or her inner beauty; a woman who seems profoundly obese to everyone else dazzles him. We often see her from his perspective, and Gwyneth Paltrow — who dons a fat suit in some parts of the movie — plays her.

"Dr. Phil: A Primetime Special: Escaping Addiction," 7 p.m., CBS. Leading into the daytime Emmys — for which he's a nominee — Phil McGraw deals with women who are addicted to pills and money.

"What I Like About You," 7 p.m., WB. This season finale had Vince feeling he doesn't have a chance with Holly. Now he plans to spend the summer in Florida.

"Daytime Emmy Awards," 8 p.m., CBS. Soap stars, cartoon characters and talk shows collide in the 32nd annual awards ceremony for shows that air when the sun is up.
