Man, 67, hurt in three-car accident

A 67-year-old man was critically injured in a three-car crash that backed up traffic for miles in both directions on the H-1 Freeway and along connecting roadways yesterday afternoon.

The accident occurred at about 2:15 p.m. just east of the Ka'ahumanu overpass. Police said the driver of a Suzuki sport utility vehicle was in the left lane when she lost control and struck a 2005 Chevy Cavalier.

The Chevy, driven by a 38-year-old man, then struck a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder. The driver of that car, the 67-year-old man, lost control of his vehicle and it flipped over.

The Nissan's driver was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The 37-year-old driver of the Suzuki, as well as the Chevy's driver and a 37-year-old woman passenger, refused medical treatment, police said.

Police shut down the east-bound lanes of the H-1 and diverted traffic to the Waimalu off-ramp. That backed up traffic on the freeway to Kunia, and also on Kamehameha Highway to Waipi'o.
