Frazier's updated plan sees big rise in revenues

University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier unveiled ambitious budget projections calling for revenues to rise 19.5 percent by 2006 and 35 percent by 2009 to put an end to at least three consecutive deficit years.

In running in the red since 2002, the athletic department has accumulated a net $4.4 million deficit and will come in somewhere between a $300,000 deficit and breaking even in the current fiscal year that concludes June 30, Frazier said.

"There is no single person in this room that wants to conquer this (deficit) issue more than yours truly," Frazier told the school's board of regents. "I suspect that is the competitive nature that I have in me. However, I wake up every day dreaming and thinking of new ways to make and raise money for our department."

According to the updated five-year revenue plan given to the regents yesterday, Frazier projects revenues to rise from $17.1 million this year to $20.45 million next year and $23 million by 2009.

"The board has had to make some hard decisions in terms of supporting Herman's plan, but it seems to be taking us where we want to go, which is back toward the black," said Kitty Lagareta, board vice chair.

Frazier said he expects the new local television contract, increased guarantees for road football games and rising seat premium sales to propel the boost in revenues. In addition, he said he is hopeful the Aloha Stadium Authority will agree to roll back the rent it charges the school, which would mean "an upside of $380,000 minimum."

Frazier said all but 148 of 660 loge level "high roller" seats at Aloha Stadium have been sold, producing "cash in hand of about $528,000," which will rise about 20 percent for the 2006 season.

What's more, he said negotiations are advancing for a road football game at Florida in 2007 or 2008. "We're going to The Swamp," Frazier said. He said talks with another "name" school he refused to disclose are also continuing and both games would be worth "large" guarantees. UH is to receive $650,000 for its game at Alabama in 2006.

Frazier said he is meeting with the chancellor's office to discuss repayment of a $1 million loan.
