Viloria's title shot set for July 30 in Las Vegas

Unbeaten Brian Viloria of Waipahu will have a tuneup bout a week from Saturday and then fight for the World Boxing Council light flyweight title July 30, his manager said yesterday.

The two fights, which "have been agreed to in principle with no outstanding issues to be resolved," according to manager Gary Gittelsohn, are part of a "multi-year, multi-fight" promotional agreement with Top Rank Inc.

The July 30 title fight against WBC champion Eric Ortiz (24-4) of Mexico will be on the undercard of the "Million Dollar Lady" main event between Christy Martin and Lucia Rijker at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

"Brian wanted to fight for a world title and Brian is ready for a world title," Gittelsohn said.

Viloria is dropping down from the 112-pound flyweight division, where he has fought all 16 of his professional bouts, to fight for the light-flyweight title at 108. Gittelsohn said the move was prompted by Jorge Arce of Mexico moving up from 108 pounds to become the No. 1 WBC contender.

"It (108 pounds) is a weight that Brian can still make but we won't campaign there for very long," Gittelsohn said. "I mean, hopefully, he will win the world title, it will be his first and, should Arce beat Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (the WBC 112-pound champion), it would set up a showdown match (at 112)."

The May 28 tuneup bout will be against an as yet unsigned opponent over eight to 10 rounds on the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez-Ivan Robinson main event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Gittelsohn said.

Gittelsohn said "the opponent isn't signed, sealed and delivered yet but it looks like it will be Mike Thomas (4-5)." Viloria decisioned Thomas over six rounds in 2001. Although much of the card will be shown on a pay-per-view basis, Gittelsohn said he wasn't sure if Viloria's bout will be included.

Gittelsohn declined to disclose the terms of the Top Rank deal. Viloria has been without a promoter since parting ways with Lou DiBella in 2003. Viloria signed with DiBella following his appearance in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

Viloria last fought in December when he knocked out Angel Priolo in seven rounds in Los Angeles.
