Maui man sentenced for attack by pit bull

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — A Maui man with an extensive criminal record in Los Angeles for drug and vicious-dog offenses was sentenced yesterday to a 20-day jail term in connection with a pit bull attack Nov. 16 at his Pukalani home.

Scot Barrie pleaded no-contest yesterday in Wailuku District Court to a dog-attack charge and contempt of court for failing to show up for a Dec. 30 arraignment. In addition to the jail term, Judge Jan Apo fined the dog owner $500. Barrie was fined $175 in March for a separate charge related to the same incident in which Sandra Sardinha, 46, was mauled as she sat on a rock wall at his property.

Barrie's blue-nosed American Staffordshire terrier, named Faust, ripped off a large chunk of Sardinha's scalp and caused severe injuries that required several surgeries. The Maui Humane Society filed a court order seeking to have the animal destroyed and euthanized the dog April 6.

Aimee Anderson, animal control director for Maui Humane Society, said the dog was involved in at least two other attacks. She also said an investigation into Barrie's background revealed a number of convictions in California for possession and sale of methamphetamine and firearm and traffic offenses.

He also was convicted of charges involving a menacing dog and a dog attack, she said.
