HAWAI'I BRIEFS
4.1 quake hits off O'ahu

Advertiser Staff

A small earthquake was recorded off O'ahu's Windward shore yesterday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the 4.1-magnitude quake occurred at 5:52 a.m. Its epicenter was about 20 miles northeast of Kane'ohe.

Few people noticed.

Police in Kane'ohe said they got no reports and did not feel the quake at the station.

The O'ahu quake came one week after a 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Big Island residents.

That quake, felt just after midnight in Ka'u, was rated "moderate" by the USGS.

Although it caused no damage it was the strongest recorded in Hawai'i in six years.

The Big Island quake's epicenter was offshore near the Lo'ihi seamount and about 27 miles from Na'alehu on the southeast side of the island.

Man charged in abuse of boy

A 32-year-old Kalihi man was charged yesterday after a 7-year-old boy told officials at Pu'uhale Elementary School that his mother's boyfriend had burned him twice.

Jason Dabalos was charged yesterday afternoon with one count of abuse of a household member and his bail was set at $2,000. Dabalos originally was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Police said they were contacted by the school after the boy said he was burned twice on the right hip about 6 p.m. on Tuesday for "not listening.'' The boy was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services and Dabalos was arrested Thursday.

The boy was treated at Kaiser Permanente's Moanalua Medical Center.
