Former HPU player named new coach

It didn't take Garrett Yukumoto long to get back into coaching baseball.

Garrett Yukumoto

The 34-year-old was named baseball coach at Hawai'i Pacific University yesterday. He succeeds Allan Sato, who resigned after the season.

Yukumoto coached at Leilehua for five seasons before having to give up the position this season when he became the school's vice principal. He will continue in that position, as the HPU job is part-time.

He played at HPU in 1992 and 1993 and earned a degree in human resources management.

"It was an opportunity to stay at home," Yukumoto said. "Being that I was alumni, it was something where I could give back and still be a part of the rich tradition that's been going on. Hopefully, I can continue that tradition."

Yukumoto also coached with the Island Movers for the past five summers.

HPU plays as an NCAA Division II independent.
