Hawai'i-Hilo's Mason 2nd in Division II golf

University of Hawai'i-Hilo senior Nick Mason shot a final-round 1-under 70 to finished in second place in the 2005 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at the Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga.
 Mason, a Leilehua High graduate, has a 72-hole total of 4-under 280, one stroke behind medalist Dane Burkhart of  South Carolina-Aiken.
 Burkhart shot a final-round 1-over 71 for a 279 total.
 With the runner-up finish, Mason becomes the Vulcans'  only two-time NCAA Division II All-American. He finished fourth in the 2004 championship.
 South Carolina-Aiken captured the team title with a 1,158, total, five strokes ahead of Armstrong Atlantic.
 Hilo finished fifth at 2941,173.
 Other UH-Hilo golfers were:  Kevin Shimomura (74294) and Garrett Okamura (73294), tied for 27th place; Colin Gilliam (77305) and Troy Higashiyama (87337).
 
 Pepperdine senior Rachel Kyono shot a 7-over 78 yesterday and finished tied for 55th place at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships at the Sunriver Resort's Meadows Course at Sunriver, Ore.
 Kyono, a 2002 Kaua'i High graduate had a four-round total of 302.
 Anna Grzebien led Duke to its third NCAA Division I women's golf title in seven years, closing with a 2-over 73 in cold and rainy conditions for a 2-over 286 total and a one-stroke victory in the individual competition.
 Duke, also the 1999 and 2002 champion, shot a four-person aggregate 13-over 297 in the final round to finish at 34-over 1,170, five strokes ahead of 2004 winner UCLA.
 Auburn finished third (2951,176),  followed by Pepperdine (2941,179). 
 Pahoa's Kimberly Kim shot a 7-over 78 yesterday and is tied for 31st place after the first round of the AJGA's Scott Robertson Memorial Tournament at Roanoke, Va.
 Kim, a student at Waiakea Intermediate, had nines of 40-38 at the 5,817-yard, par-71 (36-35) Roanoke Country Club.
 Blair Lamb of  Flat Rock, N.C.,  shot a 2-under 69 for a one-stroke lead over Lila Barton of Dallas.
 On Monday, Kim shot a 1-over-73 to claim medalist honors at a U.S. Women's Open local qualifier at Ko Olina Golf Club.
 
 Wai'anae's Guillermo decisions Battease
 Wai'anae's Samson Guillermo won by decision over Wahiawa's  Brian Battease, 5-0, last night to advance to the finals of the 125-pound division at the Golden Gloves Tournament at Little Rock, Ark.
 Guillermo, who fights out of Marquette, Mich., will meet Prenice Brewer of Cleveland in tonight's final. Brewer scored a 3-2 decision over Walter Sarnoi of Monterey Park, Calif., in the other semifinal.
