Pearl City first to sweep boys, girls crowns

By Brandon Masuoka
Advertiser Staff Writer

LA'IE — Pearl City became the first school to sweep the HHSAA State Judo Championships last night at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

The Pearl City boys won their third consecutive championship by edging Punahou, 58-54. The Pearl City girls outscored McKinley, 63-50, to win their first championship after finishing fourth last year.

"This is their reward," Pearl City girls coach Jason Katoda said. "Two years ago we were the runner-up, and we had some injuries last year. But the girls worked real hard, and everything came together this year."

The Charger girls were led by state champion Kelli Fujihara (154 pound division) and the boys were led by champions Seth Ching (145) and Christian Pavo (178).

Pearl City boys coach Ivan Yoshimura called the sweep the "ultimate goal" and deflected the credit to his coaching staff.

"No other school, I think, can say they have a better coaching staff than Pearl City," Yoshimura said. "It's all former alumni who come back to help. I think that's what makes the program stronger."

Maryknoll senior Tabitha Lum won her third consecutive state title by defeating Iolani's Megan Morisada in the 97- pound division.

"I just wanted to concentrate and do my best," Lum said. "It took me a really long time, (Morisada) put up a really good fight."

Three other competitors who were trying for their third straight title — Kahuku's Thoran Evans (114), Iolani's Catherine Chan (106) and Mililani's Corey Jo Tashima (114) — were upset yesterday.

Evans lost to Punahou's Scott Fujii in the first round, and Chan and Tashima lost in the finals.

"I practice hard, I practice with my team and I thank them for helping me get this far," said La Pietra's Alicia Huang, a junior, who also defeated Chan, a senior, in this year's Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships.

Tashima lost in overtime to Farrington freshman Tani Ader. After the five-minute regulation match, Ader won when referees penalized Tashima for stalling in the first-to-score, five-minute overtime with 1:48 remaining. Ader also defeated Tashima in the first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championships this season

"That was fair, I was doing most of the attacking," said Ader of the penalty. "She was kind of stalling and not doing any throws."

Tashima said: "I was disappointed with that, but sometimes it just doesn't go your way. Tani's a tough player herself, and it could have gone either way. She deserves it. She works hard."

McKinley's Michael Fujiuchi won his second consecutive title in the 132-pound division. Leilehua's Brad Padua won the 198-pound title after winning at 180 last year, and McKinley's Lianne Tomishima won at 139 after winning at 115 last season.

Rounding out the boys state champions were: Mililani's Kirk Shiraki (108), Moanalua's Derron Maki (114), Mililani's Jerrik Feliciano (121), Iolani's Duane Fukumoto (161), Kamehameha's Eli Maioho (220) and McKinley's Floyd Iuta (275).

Rounding out the girls state champions were: Iolani's Kira Tamashiro (90), La Pietra's Nikki Morin (125), Kamehameha's Kalei Kawa'a (172) and Kahuku's Kanoe Tani (220).
