Wai'anae's Guillermo loses Golden Gloves final

Wai'anae's Samson Guillermo lost the 125-pound final at the Golden Gloves Tournament yesterday at Little Rock, Ark.

Guillermo, who boxes out of Northern Michigan University, lost a 4-1 decision to Cleveland's Prenice Brewer.

Guillermo, 22, was the 2003 U.S. Amateur Boxing champion at 119 pounds.

Two Hawai'i boxers have won national Golden Gloves titles: Julio Rodrigues (1976, flyweight) and Tuese Ah Kiong (1998, super-heavyweight).



BASEBALL

Punahou senior Ko honored by Gatorade

Punahou first baseman Kasey Ko was named the Gatorade Hawai'i Baseball Player of the Year on Friday.

Ko, a 6-2, 210-pound senior, batted .415 this season with an on-base percentage of .561 and 15 RBIs.

He carries a 3.5 GPA and plans to attend Brigham Young University in the fall.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Lambert, partner reach Santa Barbara semis

Eric Fonoimoana and Mike Lambert beat Mark Williams and Scott Wong yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Open beach volleyball tournament at Santa Barbara, Calif. Lambert and Wong are Punahou alums.

Misty May and Kerri Walsh, meanwhile, breezed through the early rounds of the Association of Volleyball Professionals Nissan Series tournament, winning their first three matches.

Olympian Dax Holdren and Jeff Nygaard will face Fonoi-moana and Lambert today after defeating Sean Rosenthal and Larry Witt.

Todd Rogers and Sean Scott triumphed over Jake Gibb and Stein Metzger. They'll face the No. 9 seeded team of Aaron Boss and Brian Lewis. Scott and Metzger also are Punahou alums.

Karch Kiraly and partner Adam Jewell were eliminated after losing to Matt Olson and Hans Stolfus.
