News Item: NCAA headquarters this week asked the University of Hawai'i-Manoa to complete a self-study questionnaire explaining why it has a nickname Warriors that the NCAA takes as being associated with Native American imagery and believes might offend certain groups.
Mr. Herman Frazier
Athletic Director
University of Hawai'i-Manoa
Dear Mr. Frazier:
As part of a follow-up to our initial inquiry regarding the nickname "Warriors" our staff here in Indianapolis has become aware of certain other questions surrounding your institution that we would like to have explained to our satisfaction.
Please be aware that we treat violations of the NCAA constitution very seriously. So that you do not open yourself or your institution up to possible sanctions, please answer the following questions in a complete and truthful manner.
1. If your nickname really is the Warriors, then why do fans chant "Let's Go 'Bows!" at all the events?
2. What does "Geev 'um" mean and does it denote any illegal gifts by boosters to student-athletes?
3. What is "shave ice" and is it a controlled substance there?
4. Please explain what an "Aloha Ball" is in volleyball and how it differs from the official NCAA ball that is supposed to be in use at all matches?
5. In football, what is the "Senior Walk" and does this suggest a problem providing the elderly with better stadium access?
6. What is a "Midnight 'Ohana" and is it at all similar to what they call a "recruiting weekend" at the University of Colorado?
7. What is a "Pigskin Pigout" and is the government's new food pyramid being followed?
8. Do Greenpeace and Jeff Gordon know you are using the term "Rainbow Warrior?"
9. For gender equity purposes, please identify the following coaches: Michel Roy and June Jones.
10. So that we might better acquaint ourselves with your program, please use the enclosed map to pinpoint your exact location off the coast of Florida.
Sincerely,
The NCAA Compliance Dept. staff
