• JAMES C. McWHINNIE, a partner at Damon Key Leong Kupchak Hastert in Honolulu, has been elected to the board of Meritas for a three-year term. Founded in 1990, Meritas is an international alliance of more than 165 full-service law firms in more than 200 locations worldwide and provides business clients with worldwide access to comprehensive legal services.

• ARTHUR VAN DIGGELEN has been named president at Dream Cruises, which has restructured operations in a move that is designed to help the company emerge from Chapter 11. Frank Alexich becomes senior executive vice president and will oversee the daily O'ahu and Big Island operations.

First Hawaiian Bank has announced the election of three new members to its board of directors. They are: ROBERT HIAM, president & chief executive officer, Hawaii Medical Service Association; FAYE WATANABE KURREN, president, Hawaii Dental Services, and DEE JAY MAILER, chief executive officer, Kamehameha Schools. Hiam, who is president and chief executive officer of HMSA, has been with the group since 1970. Kurren, who served as president of Tesoro Hawaii Corp. from 1998 to 2003, was named president and chief executive officer of Hawaii Dental Service in 2003. Before becoming Kamehameha CEO last year, Mailer had a 27-year career in health-care, including serving as chief executive officer at Kaiser Permanente Hawai'i. First Hawaiian Bank was founded in 1858 and is Hawai'i's oldest and largest bank. It has 56 branches in Hawai'i, three on Guam and two on Saipan.

• PATRICIA TAM has been named vice president, standards and corporate relations, at Halekulani Corp., which owns and manages both the Halekulani and the Waikiki Parc Hotels on O'ahu. Beyond her current role as vice president, Tam is now responsible for overseeing all aspects of standards and practices of the hotels as support by the corporation's quality division, as well as serving as an active Halekulani Corp. representative within the community and the industry.

Finance Insurance has announced the addition of seven new agents. They are: DOUG DE LA FONTAINE, BEN GUILLERMO, TSUTOMU "TUTS" OI, JITSUO "JITS" OKAMOTO, SCOTT OZAKI, RON PAREDES and DOMINIC SIU.

• BRIAN BLACK has been hired as managing director of Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines. He is responsible for the management of Pasha Hawaii's business activities and offices in Honolulu; Kahului, Maui; Nawiliwili, Kaua'i; and Hilo, Hawai'i, with director responsibility for operations, customer service and sales activities. Black has more than 35 years of experience in logistics, transportation, finance, marketing and port operations.
