McLachlin wins Kona Open

Parker McLachlin chipped in for par on the second playoff hole to defeat Darren Summers at the Kuma Contracting Corp. Kona Open yesterday at the Kona Country Club's Ocean Course on the Big Island.

McLachlin, a Punahou and UCLA alum, shot a tournament low 7-under 65 yesterday to finished tied at 138 with Summers, who shot a 68.

Both golfers parred the first playoff hole, the par-4 first hole. On the second playoff hole, the par-5 ninth, McLachlin sank a downhill chip from the fringe for his par. Summers' 3-foot par putt lipped out.

McLachlin, a pro who now lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., started five strokes behind first-round leader and defending champion John Lynch. Summers is a pro from Kapalua Resort.

Professional Ivan Cunningham shot a 66 to tie at 140 with Lynch (72) and low-amateur Sean Maekawa (68). Amateur Jarett Hamamoto and pro Regan Lee shot a 71s to finish at 141.

Hilo's Mel Loo shot 69 and won the A flight with a 146.

14-year-olds capture match-play tourney

Fourteen-year-olds Alex Chu and Tadd Fujikawa defeated Reyn Tanaka and Ryan Perez, 1 up, to win the 54th Francis Hyde I'i Brown Four-Ball Match Play Championships yesterday.

The 36-hole final was played at Ala Wai Municipal Golf Course.

Fujikawa, who won the Hickam Invitational earlier this month, and Chu went out to a three-stroke lead after the first four holes, but Tanaka, 18, and Perez, 19, pulled even with a birdie on the 14th hole. The teams remained tied at the end of the morning round.

Chu and Fujikawa, the fourth seeds, birdied the 19th hole to go 1 up, but Tanaka and Perez, the seventh seeds, birdied the 25th hole to draw even. Chu and Fujikawa got birdies on the 28th and 31st holes to go 2 up before Tanaka and Perez birdied the 34th for the final margin.

Layne Tanaka and Curt Edwards defeated Brian Pang and Alan Adachi, 9 and 8, to win the A flight. George Akeo and Clarence Takahashi defeated Randall Wong and Darren Jay, 7 and 6, to win the B flight.

Kimberly Kim finishes 20th in junior tourney

Pahoa's Kimberly Kim shot a 5-over 76 yesterday and finished in a tie for 20th in the girls 15 to 18 division at the American Junior Golf Association's 22nd annual Scott Robertson Memorial Tournament at Roanoke, Va.

Kim, a student at Waiakea Intermediate, finished at 15-over 228, 17 strokes behind winner Kiimberly Donovan of Hopkinton, Mass., who shot a final-round 70 at Roanoke Country Club.

Robertson was a promising Roanoke Country Club golfer who died at age 14 as a result of infectious mononucleosis in the summer of 1982.

Pearl President's Cup: Entry deadline for the Pearl President's Cup is June 19. The tournament will be June 25 and 26 at Pearl Country Club. Golfers can play in A (4 to 9 handicap), B (10 to 15) or C (16 and over) flights. Entry fee is $120. The tournament offers a purse of $8,000 in gift certificates.
