Punahou alum Scott falls in final

Dax Holdren and Jeff Nygaard defeated Todd Rogers and Punahou alum Sean Scott, 21-19, 19-21, 15-9, to win the Santa Barbara (Calif.) Open beach volleyball men's title yesterday.

Misty May and Kerri Walsh, the 2004 Olympic gold medalists, defeated Jennifer Kessy and Holly McPeak, 21-12, 21-14, to win the women's title.

In the men's semifinals, Rogers and Scott beat top-seed Jake Gibb and Punahou alum Stein Metzger, 21-19, 21-14 and Holdren and Nygaard, the tournament's second seed, defeated Paul Baxter and University of Hawai'i alum Jason Ring, 21-19, 21-12.

In the women's semifinals, May and Walsh defeated Elaine Youngs and Rachel Wacholder, 21-15, 21-12, and Kessy and McPeak defeated Nancy Mason and Dianne DeNecochea, 21-18, 21-16.

The winning teams each split $20,000.



SWIMMING

Stroke lecture at UH

A free lecture designed to help triathletes and recreational swimmers improve stroke mechanics is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the University of Hawai'i athletic department auditorium.Ê

Jan Prins, director of UH's Aquatic Research Laboratory and a former UH swimming coach, will speak on "The Biomechanics of Freestyle Swimming."
