QUICK BITES
Bring your appetite to Restaurant Row

Advertiser Staff

Chefs can be said to fight hunger every day, in a sense. This week, several top Island chefs battle hunger in a broader way — helping with a "Great Chefs Fight Hunger" benefit for the Hawaii Foodbank at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Restaurant Row on the lawn fronting Hiroshi's Eurasian Tapas (corner of Punchbowl and Ala Moana). Participating restaurants include Alan Wong's, Chai's Island Bistro, Halekulani's Orchids and La Mer, Hiroshi's Eurasion Tapas, JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa, Mariposa, Roy's Restaurant, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar, Side Street Inn, Sunset Grill, 3660 on the Rise — and Nalo Farms is on board, too.

To complement the graze-and-taste menu, wines, ales and martinis will be served. Tickets are $65 per person. Call Ticketmaster: (877) 750-4400, or go to www.ticketmaster.com

The buzz on Big Island chefs, Maui fish market

• Big Island food events and chefs such as Ben Takahashi are featured on three episodes of "Best of Taste — Travels with John Sarich," now on KBFD-TV 32 (cable channel 4 on Oceanic and Chronicle). One airs at 7 a.m. today, another at 7 a.m. June 1, with repeats scheduled Aug. 3, 10 and 17 and Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 2. The program is hosted by John Sarich, culinary director of Chateau Ste. Michelle Wine Estates in Seattle, Wash.

• The May issue of Coastal Living magazine named Maui's Pa'ia Fish Market and Restaurant among its top 25 favorite dives (low-key eateries coast to coast). This real-life fish shop is also an affordable lunch and dinner spot at the corner of Baldwin Avenue and Hana Highway, serving simple fish plates, fish and chips, fish tacos and other vaguely Southwestern dishes, burgers, chicken and salads.
