Principal Miura is leading by example

There is indeed some good work going on in our public schools.

Miura
One recent example is Randall A.E. Miura, Leihoku Elementary School principal in Wai'anae, who just received the Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award.

The award, named for the late founder of Island Insurance who was a product of the public school system, rewards a public school principal for his or her dedication, creativity, community-mindedness and entrepreneurial spirit.

Miura also was honored recently as a district nominee in the statewide National Distinguished Principal competition, sponsored by the Hawai'i Elementary and Middle School Administrators Association.

The $25,000 award includes $15,000 for a school project of his choice. Miura has settled on developing a community service center equipped with technology labs and a library for students and parents. Like many communities, Wai'anae faces many economic challenges, and such a center would be a welcome, valuable asset.

He also has earned the praise of faculty, parents and students, including the Leihoku student council president, Kimie Marie Korenaga. The sixth-grader said her principal "has taught us that we should believe anything is possible." No lesson is as important in inspiring students to achieve.

Miura, it seems, has chosen to lead by example in that regard.
