"I'm excited beyond belief," said Brennan, who played at Saddleback Community College (Mission Viejo, Calif.) last season and will be among five quarterbacks competing in UH's training camp in August.

Brennan is serving a four-year probation after being found guilty of first-degree criminal trespass (entering a room) and second-degree burglary (not leaving immediately) for a January 2004 incident that occurred when he was a freshman at the University of Colorado.

His probation was transferred to California. Now Brennan is awaiting final approval of a request to allow Hawai'i authorities to oversee his probation.

Because the measure might not be finalized for another month, Brennan requested — and tentatively received — permission to move to Hawai'i while his change-of-venue request is being processed. He said he expects to receive written approval of his travel request this week.

"Once I get that, I'll be on a plane to Hawai'i," he said.

Brennan said he wants to participate in UH's off-season conditioning program, which began Monday. "I need to get that training," he said.

Dan Morrison, who coaches the UH quarterbacks, visited Brennan in California last week. Brennan said he has studied the playbook — "I know 25 to 30 percent of it," he said — and videotapes of the Warriors' practices and games.

"I was going over the tapes and the playbook, and I was so excited, I was sitting on the edge of the seat," Brennan said.

NCAA rules prohibit the coaches from discussing players who are not enrolled in school. Brennan said he received his letter of admission from UH last week.

Another walk-on quarterback, Anthony Gardner of St. Edward High School (Lakewood, Ohio), also is preparing to compete in training camp.

Gardner, who is 6 feet and 190 pounds, also has started at wideout and cornerback. He moved to quarterback in the middle of his junior year, leading St. Edward to the championship game of the Division I playoffs, Ohio's top division.

Last season, he completed 71 of 143 passes for 967 yards and six touchdowns. He ran for another seven touchdowns.

"He is a hell of an athlete," St. Edward coach John Gibbons said. "He plays with a lot of confidence. He has a nice demeanor. He doesn't get rattled. He's very focused."

Gibbons said Gardner suffered a shoulder injury during the ninth game last season "but he continued to play until our trainers noticed he was injured."

As a junior, Gardner was the starting point guard on the basketball team. Last season, St. Edward defeated St. Vincent-St. Mary, LeBron James' alma mater.

Gardner drew interest from several Mid-American Conference teams, but committed to UH after a recruiting trip to Hawai'i last month.

"I liked it a lot," Gardner said. "I liked the players and the coaches and the program. And it's Hawai'i. It's nothing like Cleveland, Ohio."

Gardner said a teammate's father was coached by Jerry Glanville, UH's new defensive coordinator.

Gardner has been told he will be allowed to compete at quarterback as a freshman. UH has seven quarterbacks on its roster, although only five — senior Jeff Rhode, Brennan, freshmen Inoke Funaki and Tyler Graunke, and Gardner — are invited to training camp. Jack Rolovich and Kainoa Akina will join the team Aug. 22, the first day of UH's fall semester.

In related news, starting free safety Leonard Peters will represent the Warriors at next month's Western Athletic Conference Media Preview for Football in Reno, UH coach June Jones said.
