Anae leaving Kahuku basketball for job in Utah

Advertiser Staff

Kahuku High girls basketball coach Wendy Anae is leaving to teach and coach at Timpview (Provo, Utah) High School, she said last night.

Anae, a 1983 Kahuku graduate who went on to play basketball at Cal State Fullerton, has been the Red Raiders' head coach the past three years, leading them to two straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association championships and the state semifinals all three seasons.

"It's just personal reasons, a change of scenery," said Anae, who added she also may pursue graduate studies in Utah. "I had heard about the opening, so it's a work opportunity. They have a pretty good (basketball) program, state contenders."

Anae's brother Robert, a former University of Hawai'i football assistant coach, is the new offensive coordinator at Brigham Young, which also is located in Provo.

MORE BASKETBALL

Guard joins UH women

Cassidy Chretien, a 5-foot-5 point guard from Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team.

Chretien is head coach Jim Bolla's first recruit at UH.

Chretien earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season when she averaged a team-high 11.9 points and 3.7 assists per game. She also averaged 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 steals a game.

"Cassidy is a true point guard who distributes the ball well and has the ability to score when needed," Bolla said in a press release. "She played in an up-tempo system, which is exactly what we want. I've had a long-standing relationship with her junior college coach and his players have been starters for me in the past. She comes highly recommended."

The first and second rounds were completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at St. Agnes, Cornwall, England.

Kennelly won her first-round heat by scoring a 7.15 (out of 10) in the final 30 seconds.

The contest is the fifth of nine on the 2005 World Championship Tour for women.
