"Hot Hawaiian Nights," the summer sizzler on KFVE-5, is alive and kicking. Returning at 7 p.m. today, it brings live music to home viewers, complete with on-site audiences — although some shows will be taped because of scheduling conflicts.

The Kekai Boyz, a Big Island-based group, will be the series' opening act this year, with the Mai Tai Bar at Ala Moana Center as the showcase for five of the 12 programs scheduled.

A trio from KCCN-FM's morning drive — Billy V, Lina Girl and Pipi — will share hosting duties.

"The goal, for the past 15 years, has been to provide the best musical talent possible," said John Fink, KFVE/KHNL general manager. "We want to give the people the opportunity to see the best as well as up-and-coming talent."

Acts were selected by Robz Yamane of KCCN Radio.

The series was launched in the early 1990s as a KHNL studio concert and has been anchored on sister station K5 The Home Team. In recent summers, the one-hour programs originated from a range of clubs and other sites; Maui hosts two telecasts this year.

Drinks and pupu service will be available at some venues; arrive early because seating is limited.

The schedule:

  • Today — Kekai Boyz, Mai Tai Bar
